The overall program mission for the B.S. degree in chemical or petroleum engineering is to provide a modern chemical or petroleum engineering education with proper balance between theory and practice. Graduates are prepared for professional practice in industry or government and for post-undergraduate training in chemical or petroleum engineering, medicine, etc. In addition to scientific and engineering training, students receive training in educational skills and in the humanities and social sciences. This program provides five emphasis of study: B.S. General | B.S. Biomedical Emphasis | ​B.S. Petroleum Emphasis | ​B.S. Premedical Emphasis | ​B.S. Envionmental Emphasis

Degrees offered:

For the M.S. degree, a minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate course work and research is required. This includes six credit hours of research work. The student, upon completion of the thesis, takes a final oral examination that may cover both course work and the thesis topic. We offer two different Master's of Science degrees: MS in Chemical Engineering and MS in Petroleum Engineering.

 


The PhD program requires completion of 45 credit hours beyond the M.S. degree or 60+ total hours for the Direct PhD path. Required are 15 hours of course work beyond the M.S. requirements, including 3 doctoral level courses in our department, two graduate courses related to the doctoral research project which may be taken in other departments at KU and combination of 30+ hours of research and seminar. Doctoral students are required to pass a Preliminary Exam of Research before becoming an official PhD Aspirant. A Comprehensive Exam will also be completed before a student can apply for graduation.
