Energy, Environmental Treatment and Impacts
The environmental group serves in a support capacity to the other groups within the Council. Many facets of energy production result in some form of environmental pollution. In today.s society, environmental pollution must either be mitigated or eliminated as part of the energy cycle. This requires knowledge of exiting pollution prevention or reduction technologies; and research into new technologies and schemes to either significantly reduce the pollutants or completely eliminate them from the process. The Environmental Group is actively involved in both of these areas. Significant ongoing activities that are being pursued are:
- Ambient air monitoring techniques to evaluate air pollution concentrations and effects.
- Air pollution emission monitoring applications in response to real-world factors.
- Minimization and re-use of process water.
- Cleanup of process waste streams
- Treatment, disposal and secondary use of solid waste materials
- Biological production of energy.
- Sequestration of carbon dioxide with biomass.
- Analysis of process and waste streams.
- Chemical reaction and transport modeling.
- Sustainability issues related to pollution.
